This is not a program about adding technology to teaching.

It is an opportunity to reconsider what it means to be an educator in a world where learning can happen anywhere, information and misinformation are abundant, intelligent technologies are reshaping human activity, and the boundaries among schools, workplaces, communities, and digital spaces are increasingly porous.

The program focuses on understanding learning deeply, designing for it intentionally, navigating change critically, and contributing to the future of learning—in your classroom, across SVVSD, and beyond.

1. Understand How People Learn

Effective learning design begins with understanding learning itself.

Participants draw from learning science, cognitive psychology, adult learning, and instructional theory to examine attention, memory, motivation, knowledge, judgment, and agency. They consider not only what works, but why—developing a foundation for making informed decisions about teaching, technology, and learning design.

The question: How do people learn, and what does that mean for the experiences we create?

2. Design for the Whole Person

There is no “average learner.”

Throughout the program, participants approach learning as a fundamentally human endeavor. They design with learner diversity, accessibility, equity, identity, agency, and lived experience in mind while applying learner-centered and universal design principles.

Technology is not the starting point. People are.

The question: How might we design learning that recognizes, includes, and empowers the people we serve?

3. Navigate Minds, Media, and Intelligent Technologies

Learning increasingly happens within environments saturated by information, media, algorithms, and artificial intelligence.

Participants investigate how these environments influence attention, cognition, participation, judgment, and human agency. They explore emerging technologies—including AI—not simply as tools to adopt, but as forces that are changing the conditions under which teaching and learning occur.

The goal is neither technological enthusiasm nor resistance, but critical, informed, and purposeful use.

The question: How can technology extend human capability while preserving the qualities of learning that matter most?

4. Expand the Learning Ecosystem

Schools are part of a much larger world of learning.

Through games, informal learning, professional learning, community environments, digital spaces, and an immersive Learning Externship, participants encounter how learning is designed beyond traditional classrooms.

They cross boundaries between K–12 education, higher education, industry, community organizations, and digital learning teams—not simply to export educational expertise, but to learn reciprocally.

What can we learn from them? What can they learn from us? What becomes possible when we work across boundaries?

5. Develop Agency to Lead Learning

The program culminates not simply in what participants know, but in what they can do with that knowledge.

Participants learn to investigate problems, question assumptions, design and evaluate solutions, navigate change, collaborate across professional contexts, and adapt their practice as learning environments evolve.

The Experiential Thesis and Learning Science Fair bring these capacities together through a public demonstration of learning, development, and contribution.

Participants leave the program prepared not merely to respond to educational change, but to mindfully and intentionally shape what comes next.
